Bangkok (Thailand)

Bangkok is the largest and capital city of Thailand. It is modern and cosmopolitan yet still manages to retain the appeal and heritage of its past through the maintenance of the busy rivers and canals, the ancient teak houses, and the many temples throughout the city,

The city’s most famous landmark is the Grand Palace which was the residence of the Kings of Thailand from the 18 th century to the early 20 th century. The palace complex - situated on the Chao Phraya River - includes a reception palace, throne hall, and the impressively beautiful Temple of the Emerald Buddha. The Grand Palace is surrounded by defensive walls and a purpose built canal, making it an island - called Ratanakosin Island.

Another popular tourist activity in Bangkok is to take a cruise along the Chao Phraya River. Some cruises offer guests the opportunity to visit the floating market at Damnoen Saduak. These narrow canals are packed with small flat boats selling tropical fruit and vegetables, fresh coconut juice, and local food precariously cooked on floating kitchens. Prices are not confirmed for any of the goods so be ready to barter with the local tradespeople!

Other activities on offer for visitors to the Oriental city of Bangkok include practicing meditation in some of the world’s most important Buddhist learning centres, learning Thai cooking from the experts, or watching some of Asia’s most exciting birdlife such as Vernal Hanging Parrots, White Throated Kingfishers and Great Hornbills.

Bangkok is a western-style yet cultural city that lacks the commercialism of Singapore and Hong Kong. Whatever you decide to do on your brief stopover, you are guaranteed to experience sanùk – which translates as ‘a Thai sense of fun.’
