Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok is the capital city of Thailand and is a modern, vibrant city that lacks the intense commercialism of other Asian tourist cities such as Singapore and Hong Kong.

The Grand Palace is the most famous landmark in the city, and was the residence of the Kings of Thailand from 18th to the 20th century. Situated on the Chao Phraya River, the Palace is an island – Ratanakosin Island - surrounded by its own canal and defensive walls. The Temple of the Emerald Buddha is the island’s most impressive feature.

A cruise along the Chao Phraya River is the best way to experience Bangkok’s way of life, and also enables a visit to the famous Damnoen Saduak markets – a narrow canal area packed with flatboats selling tropical fruit, vegetables and food cooked freshly on floating kitchens. There are no fixed prices, so visitors wishing to make a purchase must be prepared to barter!

The most important thing for tourists to experience in Singapore is sanùk – a Thai sense of fun!
